House Extension Projects

Our house extension projects focus on improving how homes look, feel, and function. We design extensions that add space without losing the character of the existing building. Every project is carefully planned to suit the needs of modern living while respecting its surroundings.

LAMMACK ROAD, BLACKBURN

This project on Lammack Road, Blackburn reflects Studio FRI’s approach to residential architecture at its most distilled-where clarity of judgement precedes form, and restraint is treated as a design virtue. The client approached Studio FRI without a fixed brief, but with a clear sense that their home was no longer serving them as it should. Rather than advancing an immediate architectural response, the early stages focused on understanding how the house needed to function, how it might evolve over time, and how any intervention would be read within its planning and residential context.

MASONWOOD, FULWOOD

This project at 7 Masonwood, Fulwood began with a familiar challenge for many bungalow owners: a single-storey layout that no longer supports how the household needs to function. Rather than extending laterally and compromising garden space, the strategy focused on whether the bungalow could be re-structured vertically to create a more legible, future-proof home — without disrupting the calm suburban character of the cul-de-sac.

HAREWOOD ROAD

Studio FRI was commissioned to reimagine a dated property on Harewood Road as a refined, contemporary family home capable of supporting multi-generational living. The brief called for clarity, discretion and long-term adaptability: a generous home for a family of five, alongside a fully independent annex for grandparents, integrated seamlessly to balance privacy with connection.

Rather than incremental change, the project demanded a holistic architectural response-one that unlocked the property’s latent potential while respecting its context and character. From the outset, Studio FRI approached the project as a strategic reconfiguration rather than a simple

extension.

ALLENGATE, FULWOOD

CHESTER ROAD, WARRINGTON

Studio FRI was appointed to transform an existing single-storey extension on Chester Road, Grappenhall into a refined, self-contained granny annexe designed for contemporary multi generational living. Set within one of Warrington’s most established residential locations, the project balances independence, comfort, and long-term adaptability while remaining thoughtfully connected to the main home. Approached as a considered architectural intervention rather than a simple conversion, the scheme prioritises clarity of layout, quality of space,

BACHE DRIVE, CHESTER

The client approached Studio FRI to refine the front elevation of their home on Bache Drive, Chester. While the property was well cared for, the entrance lacked definition. The brief was to introduce a porch extension and a subtle façade uplift that would enhance the home’s presence while blending naturally into the existing architecture, avoiding any sense of visual overstatement. The new porch was conceived as a continuation of the existing house rather than an addition. By carefully aligning roof pitch, structure and proportions, the extension integrates seamlessly into the original form.

HARRIDGE AVENUE, ROCHDALE

This project on Harridge Avenue, Rochdale reflects Studio FRI’s considered approach to bungalow extensions, where proportion, restraint and planning judgement define the outcome. The scheme introduces a front and rear dormer to an existing detached bungalow, delivering valuable additional
accommodation while preserving the home’s character and street presence.

Rather than pursuing scale for its own sake, the dormers were conceived as a natural extension of the original roof form. The result is a calm, balanced intervention that enhances the property without
architectural overstatement.
