Planning permission has been successfully approved for this refined bungalow extension and modernisation on Allengate, Fulwood, just of Garstang Road in Preston. Led by Studio FRI, the scheme transforms a traditional detached bungalow into a light-filled, future-ready family home, shaped by careful proportion, clarity of layout and a planning-led design approach. Set within one of Fulwood’s established residential streets, the project demonstrates how thoughtful architectural intervention can significantly enhance space, light and longevity while remaining quietly respectful of its context.
The original bungalow was arranged as a modest two-bedroom home with a fragmented internal layout. The approved design rebalances the plan to create a coherent four-bedroom arrangement, including a new principal suite with en-suite and walk-in wardrobe. A generous open-plan kitchen and dining space now anchors the rear of the house, opening directly onto the garden and establishing a strong connection between inside and out.
The garage has been carefully converted into high-quality habitable space, fully integrated into the overall layout rather than treated as secondary accommodation. This intervention improves both usability and long-term flexibility. At the front of the house, two dated side entrances are replaced with a single, centrally positioned front door and porch, bringing clarity, balance and a more confident sense of arrival to the façade.
A measured increase to the eaves and ridge heights allows for more generous ceiling heights and improved internal proportions across the extended areas. These adjustments enhance the sense of volume while maintaining a calm, domestic scale. Natural light is integral to the design, with a central skylight corridor and carefully positioned roof lights drawing daylight deep into the plan and creating a consistently bright interior.
The external palette is deliberately restrained, combining a crisp white silicone K-rend with black uPVC double-glazed windows and doors. Marley Modern interlocking roof tiles are specified for their performance on low-pitch roof forms and long-term durability. Internally, underfloor heating is proposed throughout, supporting improved comfort and energy efficiency and reinforcing the home’s long-term performance.
This project reflects Studio FRI’s planning-led approach, where design ambition is shaped by context, scale and policy from the outset. The successful planning approval confirms a proposal that is balanced, proportionate and well-considered within its residential setting.
