Studio FRI was appointed to transform an existing single-storey extension on Chester Road, Grappenhall into a refined, self-contained granny annexe designed for contemporary multi generational living. Set within one of Warrington’s most established residential locations, the project balances independence, comfort, and long-term adaptability while remaining thoughtfully connected to the main home.
Approached as a considered architectural intervention rather than a simple conversion, the scheme prioritises clarity of layout, quality of space, and quiet architectural confidence-delivering a living environment that feels calm, dignified, and purpose-built.
Working within a compact 8m x 6m footprint, Studio FRI carefully structured the internal layout to achieve a sense of generosity and ease. The annexe accommodates a well-balanced open-plan lounge and kitchen, a comfortable bedroom, a modern bathroom, and a dedicated utility space, all arranged to support accessible, intuitive day-to-day living. Every decision was guided by efficiency, comfort, and future flexibility, ensuring the space remains practical and relevant as needs evolve over time.
A defining feature of the project is the conversion of the existing window openings into full-height, floor-to-ceiling glazing. This simple yet powerful intervention dramatically enhances natural light, strengthens the connection to the garden, and gives the annexe a contemporary architectural presence without overpowering the host property. The result is a bright, uplifting interior that elevates the quality of everyday living and reinforces Studio FRI’s belief that even modest residential projects deserve thoughtful design.
The completed annexe provides a fully self-contained living environment while maintaining a clear and convenient relationship with the main dwelling. This balance between independence and proximity is central to successful multi-generational design, allowing occupants privacy without isolation. Designed to adapt over time, the space is equally suited to family accommodation, guest use, or future flexible living-adding long-term value to the home.
