Studio FRI was commissioned to reimagine a dated property on Harewood Road as a refined, contemporary family home capable of supporting multi-generational living. The brief called for clarity,
discretion and long-term adaptability: a generous home for a family of five, alongside a fully independent annex for grandparents, integrated seamlessly to balance privacy with connection. Rather than incremental change, the project demanded a holistic architectural response-one that unlocked the property’s latent potential while respecting its context and character.
From the outset, Studio FRI approached the project as a strategic reconfiguration rather than a simple extension. Early design thinking focused on movement, hierarchy and usability, ensuring the proposal was robust, coherent and future-facing. Planning strategy and architectural judgement shaped the design from the first sketch, allowing ambition to be realised with confidence.
The removal of the existing garage enabled a carefully composed double-storey side extension, redefining the home’s presence and internal organisation. Designed to sit comfortably alongside the original structure, the addition introduces a contemporary architectural language without visual discord. A 4-metre two-storey rear extension further enhances both living and bedroom accommodation, strengthening the relationship between shared family spaces and quieter private areas. The result is a home that feels expansive yet composed, with intuitive circulation throughout.
A restrained dormer extension was introduced to optimise roof space, delivering additional bedrooms and a Jack-and-Jill en-suite without over-dominating the existing form. Its considered proportions enhance both the external composition and internal comfort.
Internally, the house was comprehensively reconfigured to ensure every space serves a clear role. Open-plan living areas are calibrated around light, flow and connection to the garden, while private spaces are carefully zoned for calm and retreat. The annex is discreetly integrated, offering genuine independence within a unified architectural framework.
Studio FRI led the project through design development and delivery, coordinating consultants and contractors to ensure clarity, consistency and quality at every stage. Our involvement extended beyond drawings, providing informed oversight and confident decision-making throughout.
The completed home on Harewood Road offers a measured, elegant response to contemporary family life. Flexible, future-proof and quietly confident, it supports evolving needs while maintaining architectural integrity and balance.
