Studio FRI was approached by a discerning homeowner with the vision of transforming a dated and underutilised property into a spacious, contemporary family home. The brief was to create a home that would not only accommodate a growing family of five but also provide a fully independent annex for the grandparents, ensuring both comfort and privacy for multi-generational living. From the initial consultation, it was clear that the client sought a design that would redefine the property’s layout, maximising its potential while respecting both functional and aesthetic requirements. Our design concept entailed a radical re-imagining of the existing structure, with the key focus being the enhancement of the overall living space and functionality. The existing garage was removed to make room for a double-storey side extension, which served as the perfect addition to provide additional living space. This extension was designed with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that the new build harmonised with the existing structure, both aesthetically and functionally. It created a fresh, modern façade and transformed the property’s internal flow, making it a perfect fit for the family’s lifestyle.
To further enhance the property, we extended the rear of the house by 4m. This extension enabled us to create a two-storey addition that greatly expanded the living areas and bedrooms, thus increasing the home’s capacity and improving the overall flow between rooms. It also ensured that the design maintained a balanced relationship between private and communal spaces, which is crucial for families living in larger homes.
A dormer extension was added to the property’s roof to take advantage of the available space, allowing us to create additional bedrooms while simultaneously improving the overall aesthetic of the property. This dormer included a Jack and Jill ensuite, ensuring that all family members would have sufficient space and comfort, while keeping the design modern and practical.
In addition to expanding the property’s physical footprint, we also redesigned the interior to optimise the use of every square inch of space. Every room was carefully considered and designed to serve a functional purpose, while ensuring the space remained comfortable, well-lit, and visually cohesive. The new layout prioritised the flow between rooms, with open-plan living areas designed to connect seamlessly with outdoor spaces, promoting both family interaction and private time.
Throughout the design and construction phases, our team worked closely with structural engineers, contractors, and other specialists to ensure that the project remained on schedule, on budget, and aligned with the client’s vision.
